About this image
Codnor Gate; The house standing out on the pathway was a shop run for many years by a Mrs Grainger. Her husband was a well-known cricketer by the name of Yotte Grainger.
Codnor Gate Farm (Lynam's Farm) is out of sight on the left of this picture. Mrs Grainger sold bread at her shop. The Gate Inn was down the road on the right and beyond that was the Co-op. The wall on the right of the photo had an advertisment hoarding on it and for a long time it advertised Park Drive cigarettes (2d for 10, 4d for 20!). I think it was a Mr. Syson who lived in the first semi-detached house to the right of the hoarding (out of picture) and he was the owner of the Codnor Gate garage which was just up the road towards Ripley. It's not clear if this photograph was taken after the trolley buses ceased running in the early 1950's. (Information kindly supplied by B G Bryan).
