About this image
The photograph shows a number of shops and buildings. Also; left of photo is William Southern's, Chemist and Druggist. Followed to the right by, the wholesale grocers, the Bakewell Brothers (now part of Colledge's Furniture store). Following on you can see Waterloo House and John Burton's millinery shop. These were damaged by fire and then demolished as part of road widening. On the far right is George Baringer, grocer, wine merchant and provision dealer. Mr Barington (in the bowler hat) and his assistant can be seen in the doorway with the horsedrawn cart outside. The sign shows he was an agent for Robinson & Co.'s Burton Ales and W. & A. Gilbey's wine growers and distillers. Next door is Jones & Co., drapers. In the centre is the White Swan pub.
