About this image
The original caption written by the photographer reads:
'The WEAKER SEX?
Our rambling reporter met these girls out in the heart of the lonely BURBAGE MOORLANDS - Derbyshire, miles away from a Highway - they came for practice climbs on the famous gritstone rocks here, being members of the VOLKIIE rock climbing club of DERBY. They were Miss Taylor and Miss Bloomfield of 10 Edwell Street, Derby - and came complete with sleeping bags, food and climbing rope, and were sleeping out in the open in Higgar Tor ancient British Fort here, with only the STARS above them for cover. Just as their forbears slept here over 50,000 years ago. Inviting him to join in the climbing, he found the 'climbs' varied from 25 to 100ft high, and noticed the girls lack nothing in the way of 'NERVES' during the climbs.'
No Edwell Street has been traced in Derby; in all probability the womens' address was Etwall Street and was misheard by the photographer.
Does anyone know of the 'VOLKIIE' Rock Climbing Club in Derby (again the spelling might not be entirely accurate)?
