Vera was cook at Oldham House where most of the WAAF (Womens' Auxiliary Air Force) lived while on staff at the hospital at Rockside. During the second World War Rockside was used as an RAF psychiatric hospital. The couple went on to own the Northumberland Hotel in Blackpool.
