About this image
Bakewell Bridge can just be seen on the left. The bridge dates from c 1300, and has 5 ribbed pointed arches with breakwaters. It was widened on the north upstream side in the 19th century. Bridge House is a pair of large solid pair of early 19 century houses. The gardens are presumed to have been laid out by Paxton (who worked at nearby Chatsworth), and there was a reference to this in (now lost) records which belonged to the Duke of Rutland's surgeon who lived at the house. (Paxton is also famed for designing The Crystal Palace)
