About this image
Two onlookers watch as a car with a lady driver at the wheel negotiates the ford at Wetton Mill. Although this is in the Manifold Valley, the stream crossing the road here is the Hoo Brook, a tributary of the River Manifold.
The sign on the right reads 'BEWARE OF TRAINS', which is a reference to the Leek & Manifold Valley Light Railway, a narrow gauge (2ft 6in) line that linked Waterhouses with Hulme End. This crossed the road in the right background by means of a level crossing and a little to the north of this was Wetton Mill station. The L&MVLR was in operation from 1904 to 1934.
The car - WE 8134 - was registered by Sheffield County Borough Council in the period 1927-30. This might suggest it was owned by the photographer (a Sheffield-based freelance photographic journalist) and that he has staged this scene.
Can anyone identify the make and model of the vehicle?
