About this image
Looking east towards Castleton showing the then rough unsurfaced road and the slightly incongruous line of telegraph poles.
The photographer's original caption reads: 'A new Road suggested down here to replace Mam Tor Road', this being a reference to the landslip-prone main road linking Manchester and Sheffield via Castleton. Soon after this view was taken, the Winnats route was indeed improved using tarmac and eventually (from 1979) became the only available highway, the on-going struggle to maintain the subsiding road around Mam Tor being finally given up.
