About this image
Looking south-east with the (empty) circular village pond forming a prominent feature in the foreground. Beyond that, left of centre is a cross bearing the date 1868, while the car is parked outside The Bull's Head Inn. The large advertisements - which seem a little out of place in such a rural location - promote 'Guineess is good for you' and 'Greta Colday with a cup of hot Oxo.'
The picture was probably taken during a period of drought - the photographer, Frank Brindley, a Sheffield-based freelance photo journalist, seems to have had a penchant for recording such events.
