About this image
The photographer's original caption for this view reads: 'LUCKY TRAVELLERS - in the rain. Photo shows the 'Gay Gordon', one of the few left of the original OLD TIMES coaches, making a tour of Britain, starting from London, to finish in Edinburgh. Photo shows them passing Darley Dale, Derbyshire at full gallop. Making a picture seldom seen in Britain today.'
Lime Tree Avenue forms part of the main A6 through the village and the coach is seen here passing the junction with South Park Avenue. The Gay Gordon performed on the London to Edinburgh run regularly between 1832 and 1964 - by a curious coincidence the coach is today preserved in the collection of the Red House Stables & Carriage Museum at Darley Dale.
