About this image
The photographer's original caption relating to this view reads: 'The Milestones to Victory Uncovered at Darley Dale, Derbyshire.' He has also added 'Passed by Censor today', which suggests a date during World War Two.
The 'milestones' commemorated include Malta, Dunkirk, the River Plate, The Battle of Britain (September 1940), Jervis Bay, Narvik and one other. They were positioned inside a railed enclosure provided originally to protect an ancient yew tree in the graveyard of St Helen's Parish Church. The yew is said to be 2,000 years old and has a girth of 33 feet (4 feet from the ground). In this view a descriptive plaque and collection box are attached to the railings.
