About this image
The photographer's original caption reads:
'Risking life for a Dog down 140ft deep old mine Shaft in Calver Moorlands, Derbyshire, 14 miles from Sheffield. Top of run in Shaft with Mr Alexander N.F.S. [National Fire Service] about to descend.'
As this was during the Second World War the photo had to be passed for publication by the Press & Censorship Bureau, which it was on 1 February 1944, although the image itself may have been taken some time before this.
Does anyone recognise the location of what was presumably an old lead mine?
