About this image
A man in a cap and plus-fours fishing below Baslow Weir. The weir formerly powered the corn mill in the background, which had fallen into disuse by the early 1920s; close examination here shows that the waterwheel has been removed. Baslow Bridge is in the distance.
The photographer's original caption for this image did not let the mill's disuse spoil a good story and read: 'Where rain is wanted. The River Derwent at Baslow, Derbyshire is so low the Mill has stopped and Fishermen wander dry foot along the stream. This time of year, it should be running in flood.'
