About this image
Two young boys, seemingly in school uniforms, climbing what looks to be a sheer rockface.
This photo was originally submitted by the photographer to accompany an article called 'The Dormant Quarry Wealth of North Derbyshire', most probably to a Sheffield or Derbyshire based newspaper. Whether it was published or not is unknown.
His caption for it read: 'Inside a derelict Marble Quarry near Bakewell and Monyash' and from this description it seems likely this view was taken in Ricklow Quarry, towards the top end of Lathkill Dale. However, confirmation of this (or otherwise) would be welcome.
The 'marble' obtained at Ricklow was in fact a highly-polished fossil-filled limestone, veined grey in colour. The quarry was out of use by 1922, which also fits with the description.
