Well Dressing, Village Well, Tideswell, 1952
From collection of F H Brindley

About this image
Village Well, situated on Fountain Square, dressed with the theme 'Behold I send you forth', a biblical quotation (Matthew 10:16) that reads in full: 'Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.'
The dressing also commemorates the Silver Jubilee of the Derby Diocese, created on 7 July 1927 by combining the archdeaconries of Derby and Chesterfield; they had previously been part of the Southwell Diocese and earlier still belonged to Lichfield. Both Lichfield Cathedral and Southwell Minster appear to be represented to either side of the main picture with Derby Cathedral below.
The photographer recorded: 'Tideswell Well Dressing. How Derbyshire Churches Make Religion Interesting' and 'Built on a background of red flower petals with the picture done also in flower blooms. Local working members of the Church build pictures to show extracts from the Bible. This beautiful work of art stands near to the Church of Tideswell where thousands of visitors will see it this week. The blooms are set in wet clay and are designed by working men.'
