About this image
Sheepwash Well dressed with the theme 'The True Vine'.
This is a biblical reference to John 15:1û6: 'I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you.'
The ancient tradition of well dressing was revived in Ashford from 1930, Sheepwash Mill with its octagonal canopy, in a prominent position at the junction of Fennell Street and Buxton Road, being the first well to be decorated.
More prosaically, what is probably a cast iron lamp post on the left of this view possibly owes its striped black and white paint scheme to visibilty requirements during the World War Two blackout.
