About this image
Looking north east with the Peacock Hotel in the background. The highway is the A621 from Baslow to Sheffield.
Owler Bar is an important road junction where the A621 intersects with the B6054 from Calver to Bradway and the B6051 from Chesterfield. This importance accounts for the presence of the onetime toll cottage visible beyond the hotel and still extant today, having been listed Grade II since 1975. In more modern times the road layout at Owler Bar has been considerably modified to accommodate increased traffic and now looks very different from how it appears in this view.
The photographer titled this picture 'Winter Arrives in Sheffield. Dec 9th/33', adding 'Photo shows the scene today at Owler Bar, nr Sheffield, where the snow arrived today. The Derbyshire hills are all covered too.'
