About this image
The photographer titled this view (which he also marked in red 'Passed by Censor today') '1914 war relic found on old Tip. Compare this with our latest Bomb'. He added the following description: 'Men getting spar, on an old Derbyshire mine tip, found this black, pitted, rusty Zeppelin Bomb - Germany's largest in the last war. Dated 1914, made at Essen, Germany, where our men raided a few days ago. Policeman holding it to show size.'
Allied bombers first attacked Essen - where the Krupp armaments production facilities were a primary target - in March 1942 with raids being particularly heavy during the following year. The last raids occurred in March 1945.
