Rail Crash at Westhouses, 1968
Mrs M King
13 September 1968
About this image
The accident took place almost exactly in line with No. 1 Midland Terrace.
The locomotive(s) involved (there appears to be a second one on its side and nose-to-nose with the loco remaining upright, numbered D8189) was known as an 'English Electric Type 1'. Members of this short-lived and not very powerful class were often to be seen in pairs (known as 'double heading') on coal trains in this area. The locomotive's diesel-electric engine made a distinctive whirring sound. Most coal traffic was carried in the 16 ton capacity mineral-waggons.
