About this image
The wrought iron arbour installed in the gardens in 1706-11 by Robert Bakewell, considered to be his masterpiece. The hall was originally the medieval residence of the Bishops of Carlisle, but was leased from them by the Secretary of State to Charles I, Sir John Coke, in the 17th century. The hall was then greatly enlarged and altered.
