About this image
One of a pair of photographs of an unknown lace factory (see also DCHQ006424). The man is posed at a Leaver's (or Lever's) machine (the back of the photograph bears a faint pencil sketch of a Leaver's carriage). Nottingham was world famous not only for the lace produced on these machines, but also for the manufacturer of the machines themselves, e.g. Messrs F. W. Burton at Lenton, and Newton and Pyecroft Limited.
