About this image
From an old painting taken from a photograph by T.W Howe 1964. A very unusual post mill as much as it stood supported on three cross trees and six quarter bars. A round house for storage purposes (not for support) was built round the base supports. The mill was in excellent condition when the persistence of the farmer following Mr Hauton eventually persuaded Colonel Whyle to allow him to destroy it so that other buildings could be erected. Was still working 1910 - owner - Colonel Whyle - who was Lord of the Manor of Costock - Tenants had to go to his house each week to pay rent - His wife sat at table and marked them off - Miller 1910 Mr John Hallam of Costock who also kept the post office for 60 years
