Moment of victory at the World Champion Hen Races
The Dale, Barley Mow Yard
About this image
The Barley Mow is famous for its annual Hen Race, held on the first Saturday of August each year. It is free to watch and anyone with a hen can enter. The pub houses an extravaganza of decorative objects devoted to hens and is a real hen-lovers paradise. The 2003 Championship, held on 2 August was the largest event ever. Over 30 hens competed for the Championship - the winner was Ginger Rogers, owned by Phil Addis and raced by Steve and Lorraine. This is the third time Phil has had a winning hen and this makes him the most successful owner in the history of hen racing. (information from www.barleymowbonsall.co.uk).
