About this image
Looking east with the site of Manners Colliery (closed in 1949) in the right middle distance. Running from left to right along the valley of the Nut Brook are (from bottom of the picture upwards) the abandoned Nutbrook Canal (closed 1895), the ex-Midland Railway Mapperley Colliery and Stanton & Shipley branches (closed 1965-6), and the abandoned ex-Great Northern Railway Ilkeston-Heanor branch (closed 1963). The spurs off both the MR and the GNR lines serving Manners Colliery can also be seen, while the area in the right foreground forms part of the West Hallam Disposal Point, used for processing coal mined by opencasting.
