About this image
Textile firm W Ball and Son Ltd's long-established Albion Works looking east. The main four-storey section on the right dates from 1848 and was Listed Grade II in 1986, some three years after this view was taken.
W Ball and Son can trace its origins back to the 1820s, won a gold medal at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and by the early 21st century was said to be 'the oldest existing warp-knitting company in the world'. In 2014 (trading as Baltex) they were engaged in the manufacture of technical fabrics for aerospace, healthcare and military purposes, together with 3D spacer fabrics intended to supplant foam and neoprene products.
