About this image
The depot was closed in October 1965. A view of 2 'dead' (i.e. not in steam) 'O4' class freight-engines. The one on the left is either an 'O4/1' (i.e. variant 1) or an 'O4/3' (variant 3) and the one on the right is an O4/8. The appearance of these 2 types was more or less identical. (Ex-LNER steam locomotives, as these are, were identified by a letter indicating the wheel arrangement of the class. 'O' class engines (O1, O2, O4 etc) were the 2-8-0 type. Another way to describe a steam locomotive was to give its power classification; a number on a scale of zero to 9 inclusive, the higher this number, the more powerful the engine. The 'O4' class were coded '7F', 'F' meaning freight.)
