About this image
Village Well, situated on Fountain Square, dressed with the theme 'O Give Thanks Unto the Lord' accompanied by an illustration of Wells Cathedral in Somerset.
The quotation is from Psalm 136 ('O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever'), but the significance of Wells Cathedral may be no more than a play on words (the city of Wells takes its name from three wells dedicate to St Andrew). Alpha (Α) and omega (Ω), displayed atop the dressing, are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, and a biblical title of Christ or of God in the Book of Revelation.
